150th Anniversary of the Carson City Mint, 1870 – 2020

Although legislation authorizing the creation of the U.S. Branch Mint at Carson City was passed by Congress on March 3, 1863, actual construction did not begin until three years later. The mint officially opened for business early in January of 1870, and on February 4, 1870, this press struck the first coin bearing the soon-to-be-famous CC mint mark, a Liberty Seated dollar.
Celebrate the sesquicentennial of the Carson City Mint and Historic Coin Press No. 1 with the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, through a series of events and exhibits through 2020.

Half Dollar Release Party!

5 PM – 8 PM, $150 ticket price, members, $142, includes pure silver planchet. Event only tickets are $25, members $17. Catered party. Raffle drawing for place in line (Friends of NSM fundraiser.)

The Half Dollar Release Party will be the first 200 strikes of a replica 1870 CC minted Liberty Seated half dollar on Coin Press No. 1, the same press that struck the originals in 1870, and in the very same Carson City Mint.  The Half Dollar replicas are .999 fine Nevada silver with CC mint mark. Replicas are incused with “copy” as required by law. Each replica is mounted in a card bearing its series number. Who receives one of the first 100 strikes will be determined by a raffle drawing at the party. Raffle tickets may be purchased in advance at the museum and at the event.

This replica will have a total mintage of 3,000 pieces, generally available for purchase beginning August 2, 2019, and all to be minted on Coin Press No. 1 and mounted in a card noting its series number. Orders will be taken by phone or email beginning July 1, 2019, but not filled until after the Release Party.

For information on attending the party or ordering a replica coin, contact the museum at (775) 687-4810, ext 224. Or, send an email to Nicolette Johnston at njohnston@nevadaculture.org. Please provide information on what you wish to order and how to contact you.  If calling, and you get the recording indicating the voice mailbox is full, and you can't use email, then please call back the next day after we've had a chance to clear the messages. We appreciate your patience!
